Wifi CSI (Channel State Information) is detailed information about how WiFi signals propagate through an environment between a transmitter and receiver.
When WiFi signals travel through space, they interact with objects, walls, and people, creating multipath effects where the signal takes different paths and arrives at slightly different times with varying strengths and phases
CSI has enabled some interesting applications beyond traditional networking, including:
- Motion detection and tracking - people moving changes the signal propagation patterns
- Gesture recognition - hand movements create distinctive CSI signatures
- Breathing and heartbeat detection - even subtle chest movements affect WiFi signals
- Device-free localization - tracking people without them carrying any device
- Fall detection for elderly care
- Better channel estimation for improving WiFi performance itself
